DELCO RADIO SERVICE At:
Crockett Sound Laboratory
729 Hwy 54 South
Alamo,TN.38001

I know, I know, these Delco Car Radios of my era, 1985 back! Better than an man on earth!
Since I know, I know, and, now You know, I Know! You Know we do it MY WAY! Until You can do a Delco better than i, follow me! Then if You think You can pass me! TRY!

I am now semi retired and, only work on about 50 units a year at my P~LEASURE! Mostly when the weather is to bad in West Tennessee for me to do anything outside in the Sunshine,or under the stars at night!
IF You try to push me along i am going to sit down and watch rerererererererererereruns of the Flintstones, Jetsons, Johnny Quest!

Since i am blessed with more request for work than i can take care of a lot of this is meant to get rid of those who are not going to do it MY WAY!

IF YOU ARE HOPING TO GET ME TO DO A RESTORATION ON YOUR DELCO PROJECT!:
Start by spending some time on my website! Hey! It is Your radio IF YOU do not care enough about it to spend some of YOUR time reading my words. They You ain't what i am looking for! And, it will be best for both of us, for YOU! to move on NOW!
Then get on my RSVP work list by sending me a one page work order with $25.00 RSVP fee.
Put all the info i need to do the job You want done on a one page of CLEAN 8.5X11 sheet with YOUR return info first thing at the top against the left hand side! WORK ORDER. If You do not print out and fill in Please! Follow this outline.

Please put a second work order in with unit! when it is sent in. This second work order is what i follow to restore You unit! I will remember nothing from a phone call or email so IF You do change work request keep reminding me of that change! OR it most likely will not get done!

Please! Do not send me an email to ansewer every question You have! Find the answers to Your question on this website! It has all the info You need! From where to send work to how to pay me! To return shipping details! I have started to charge $100.00 for asking how to pay me! Look on Delco page and find the info your self!

I need to work on radios not repeat info on website to every coustomer! in emails.

Another big waste of my time is those wanting out of the blue progress reports!
When i have something to report about a job i will do so! Until I send a progress update, there is nothing of substance i can tell You! Other than: I have not started on Your project. I have parts ordered. I am working on Your unit and will let You know when i have some thing of importance to say. Take Your pick!
Perfectly fine and understandable that IF Your project has been in shop and, have not heard form me in more than THREE mouths You might want to know IF i am still alive. And it is fine to send an email asking so! With out any charges. Just don't make me switch my focus from working on the radio to Your email!

Walk ins: NOT WELCOME
Put You Delco on the UPS Truck.

When i do call in Your project it will be with 4 or 5 others. And with a couple of weeks lea way before i finish with last radios of last batch.

When will my radio be ready? I have NO idea! To many factors totaly out of control! Seen to many go up in smoke when i though they were ready to go home! Unit are 40, 50, 60 years old! Some parts are next to impossible to find so i have to make them.
Any time line prediction i could give is only a S.W.A.G. at best! Then IF i do not meet it, some think they got the gold ring to start harassing me to finish there radio. Witch gets their project put to the back of the longest line and several Bozo taxes applied to bill.
Answering email or phone calls takes me from what i need to be doing! WORKING ON RADIOS! Not only Yours but the others who have sent in there money and waited ther time quitely to have one who can not understand what he reads to stop shops progress! So i will make no time line prediction of any kind for when You may send in project to when project will go on UPS truck.

NOTHING! You say on the phone or state in an email is goning to change what is on this website! It is the same for one and all!

Over stressed push, going to make it happen types GO A WAY! I Do not want or need Your work!

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:

IF You want Your project for spring You most likely will need to be on my work list by mid Nonvember. IF You wait till March (many years) it may be August before i can get to Your project.

RSVP fee is to help make sure i have a reliable base of what work is coming in. And, can give a time frame to those wanting to send a unit in for restoration. IF You do not send unit in for a restoration the RSVP fee is NOT RETURNED. The RSVP fee is deducted from the Basic Electronic Restoration or check out fee.

Use a box large enough to protect shipment. But do not usa a box so big it can not be easilly handled or radio more likely to be damaged in shipment.

E~Caps need two weeks of contious on time to properly charge once they are installed. If the unit is not played for at least two weeks after the basic work is done, then I am only assuming I have it restored as it should be.

When I was 14 years old. I was the ONE, the men who designed and built Delco Car Radios chose to train and bestow there knowledge to! So by the time i got to be 50 there would be some one to keep there radios going! The called me there Wonder~Boy!
They looked for others BUT did find them! This was in 1967! I have forgot more Vintage Delco Radio secerts than any one else knows!
Delco Radio certified only one other man after me. Dr. M.R. Bose.

I use oscillators, oscilloscopes, frequency counter and other test gear witch are big help in getting the units to a starting point for fine tuning with the most sophisticated test gear in the world! "The human ear!"
Not only my golden ears, but those of top pro audio engineers form around the world. Working with the top music stars of all time! Who often stop by to see me!

A TRUE AUDIO PHILE wants NO tone control, adding distoration to his sound. What he wants is power amps with BIG WATTS so he can hear the weak sounds in the back ground!
And quality speakers that can reproduce that sound accurately! So big Watt power amp and quality speakers are the secerate to impressive sound!

I was certified by Motorola and, RCA in 1966. And doing Zenith warranty work for there local dealer. In 1967 at the age of 14 i was certified by Delco. After school i got into build recording studios, and pro audio work.

I welcome any other electronic service tech to put one of there projects on top of one of mine! Where the difference will become quite plain.

When can i send in my radio or WHEN IS MY RADIO GOING TO BE READY?
To many factors out of my control. The ONLY time line predictions i will give is how many units are in shop to be worked on ahead of Your unit, and, on the RSVP list at this time!

Working on radios is not like building a motor or tranny just because i spend my time on them does not mean any thing done at the end of the day! I could be two weeks father behind than if i did nothing!
It is a treat to spend three days installing parts in a unit. Fire it up listen to it play for 15 minutes then see it go up in smoke! The days i work the hardest, I am usually not as far ahead at the end of as when i started?

In 40+ years of working on Delco Car Radios when they will be finished is the one thing i have yet to figure out!

In 1962 Delco built their 25th million radio.

Every question asked of me about Delco Radios in the last 15 years that i am going to answer, is answered on this website with more thought and detail that i will be able to put into a email!

Crockett Sound Lab is a one person shop focused on providing the highest quality work on your Delco Radio. Giving it all the time it needs. Not Your desires! of wanting to put the radio back in the car.

NO TECH ADVISE, NO PARTS, NO RADIOS FOR SALE! I only do FULL restorations!

IF You are looking for a Delco radio for Your 1958 to 1985 GM car the only way You are going to get one of those units worth installing is IF i have done a Basic Electronic Restoration on it with in the last five years! Any thing else is just a core! that is in need of one of my Basic Electronic Restoration services!

The best advise i can give You is to look on the model and date code page to get the model # for the unit You seek then find a core and send it to me for a Basic Electronic Restoration service.

I would think the easiest place to look for a core would be www.ebay.com BUT fact is the worst "JUNK!" that comes into the shop is the fully restored units off eBay!!! So get one that was in the closet for the last 20 years, that they know nothing about. Those that sat on the shelf in the garage have problems with oil and other debris in them! Body Shop radios being the worst! It amazes me at how many radios i buy for parts off eBay that are said to be working are not!

Even though they maybe in stereo, four 44 Watt per channel amps driving four speakers is not going to sound any where close to as good, as a Delco driving one 150 Watt amp, driving one "High~Pro" full range, two way 6"X9" speaker.
But the four mid ranges will add a lot to the Delco's 6"X9" system's sound quality.

What is the value of my radio? What ever You can get some one to PAY You for it!

I give a five year written, signed warranty on most all units i work on. For the LABOR & PARTS that i install. On radios designed to be obsolete in 8 years! That Delco gave a 90 day warranty on when they were new! That are now 30, 40, 50+ years old!!!
This does not mean that after You get it back You have the right to take a hammer to the PCB and expect for me to take care of it without charging You more!

NOTE TO THOSE SENDING IN A UNIT FOR A RESTORATION:

Squeaky wheel type costumers go to the back of the longest line! Trying to force Your unit through the shop just does not WORK with me!

What it will do is get You charged for time & supplies spent on it and, returned unfinished!
I work on them in the order i am paid and the only reason i will sit one aside and go onto another unit is because i do not have the parts need to finish up on the job at hand!

Most every one is trying to make the "BIG CAR SHOW", "ROAD TRIP", "COMPLETE THE RESTORATION", "GET MARRIED", or meet up with the "X", "ETC" Trying to keep up with witch one i am to work on next or deal with a real problem client becomes more of a problem than restoring the radios!

I can not work 24 hours a day, give up MY weekends!, holidays!, or vacation!! and ever get any radios restored!

I charge the same for my time not matter what i am doing!

I understand that You want to know IF i have the ability to restore Your unit. So I welcome ONE phone call to kinda get to know me, BUT after that they are $200.00 for first 10 minutes and $175.00 an hour after that! on each call! But please only call about doing a restoration for You!

IF the fact that in 1966 DELCO searched for school boys to train on there radios and i was the ONLY ONE! They found! Then came to Alamo, TN in the fall of 1967 and set up a 14 year old kid as one of only 43 MEN at the time to ever to get so CERTIFIED and PAID him $50.00 an hour to service their radios, along with that in later years i got into the RECORDING STUDIO BUILDING industry working the very TOP PROFESSIONAL in it as well as the TOP artist in the MUSIC business, does not convince You! Then talk to my coustomers! The are at all the big car shows.

DO NOT make any plans for Car Shows, with Your mechanic, coustmer, or a trip with girl friend until You have radio back workng in Your car! for two weeks!!!

I DO NOT do RUSH jobs! I work on them as i am paid! First to pay me is the first to get worked on! Fastest way to get it back is to send in RSVP fee check and wait for me to email You to send it in for it's restoration.

In my 40+ years servicing Delco Radios i have had many screams, plans, and gyrations thrown my way to get me to reduce rates and now days trying to push a unit through the shop ahead of others. Only one handled this matter with pride and professionally.
Mr. James Nealy owner of INTERSTATE Bar~Bee Que in Memphis TN asked IF a $500.00 tip would get his 66 Olds radio worked on next?

Chashiers Checks DO NOT speed up my work! Or turn arround time. If on a bank that is not in Tennessee still takes 10 days to clear my bank!
PayPal payments are faster and IF possible mean i do not have to wait for a payment to clear before i start working or reship units.
My normal reship is the next shipment out of shop once payment has cleared. IF You wish me to sechudule a next day one time pick up as soon as payment clears it will add $10.00 to UPS fee.
Some times i may be out of the shop a few days working on a Prefessional Audio Project and not be in place for UPS shipments.

In the VERY RARE event that You need warranty work, come backs get first open spot on bench!

New modern day electronics? ALL analog audio circuits, tube as well as transistor, are covered by Bell Laboratory patents of 1938! No amp sounds as good as does the 6V6 tube used in the 53,54, Corvette radios! AND modern electronics are disposable just like a Bic lighter! Goverment regulations determain what is built today! Not what sounds the best!

TRUE audiophiles do not want any type of tone control on their systems! So why change Delco's bass and trebble controls? Witch the Audio Cyplida use as a referances standard!

I Will only deal with one person per radio so appoint someone that is in charge! of the radio restoration project!
Preferably the owner of the unit!

FLAT RATES: Why should a survivor radio in near mint condition or even an average radio cost the same as one that has many more problems and takes a lot more time! I charge for the work i do on YOUR radio!

I DO NOT service ETR digital read out Delco radios made after 1985! And, had rather not work on the Electronicaly Tuned Radios! Because the only way to get them working is to take as many cores as need and make a working radio out of them. Several productions runs of the same modeld that are not the same radio.

I know nothing about unlocking codes on new radios!

80% of all the radios sent to me have been Pre 68 Corvette models & this website reflects that.

Yes Sir! I work any Delco made before 1985 back to 1953 unit regular. Only Certified [in 1967 at the age of 14] on the 1958 to 1975 models.

I have serviced several of the PRE 1958 units, they have a great many parts that must be replaced.
Speaker will need to be reconed or replaced and, are charged as a seperate job.

I DO NOT support Delco Do It Yourselfers!Teaching is the hardest of all skills. I stay behind in prepaid work and it is not right form me to not spend my time working on there projects. It takes to much training, test equipment and OJT to service electronic.

I do not care who you are Your radio ain't gonna come close to being as sweet as mine! What ends up happing is that You turn a 3 day job into a 2 week battle. And i charge You MORE!!! Please Do Not Try This @ Home! Do not ask me how to fix Yo radio! That is E3 stuff and i will keep all those secrets for my self!

''PLEASE!'' DO NOT try and describe the KACHAKAKA problem with Your radio! This is a real waste of my time! Only way i can fix it is if it is on my bench in front of me!

Yes! where i come from we were taught to say "Thank You!" BUT where we are NOW is the internet! AND netters say it is rude to send a second email just to say thank you! It slows down the net for all and, it takes almost 45 seconds out of my life to open & delite a Thank You email X 30 to 50 a day some times! AND i did say ''PLEASE!'' Do NOT SEND THANK YOU EMAILS. Unlees it is to say thanks for the great job i did on Your unit!

After going through 5 sets of those off eBay tubes I refuse to install any more. FACT: there is NO tube tester ever made that works! Best way to test a tube is in the unit playing!
eBay pull out tubes Waste days of my time AND one even burnt up the 2nd IF coil in a unit, when it shorted out after 3 days of playing good then after it cooled down worked another 3 days and burnt the replacement coil up.

No idea of what radio will fit what car! all i ever see them in is a cardboard box except for what the matching numbers are for each year & model and they are paper, on the side of radio. and a lot of the time missing! Mechanics & Salvage Yards know about instlations.

My expertise is INSIDE the radio. 1958 ~ 1975 DELCO MODEL & DATE CODES If You do not find it here i can not help You!

HOW DO I HOOK UP MY RADIO?:

''FORGET IT!'': These radios needed preventive maintainace 10 years after they were built. IF they do play at all, it ''AIN'T GONNA BE CLOSE TO RIGHT!'' On top of that You run the risk of damaging parts that can only be had from donor radios.
It's like finding a Vette that has been sitting in a barn covered with a tarp and, hay for 40 years. Expecting to jump start and, drive it. Where do so many of You~All get the idea the radios last forever with nothing being done to them?
Best advise: Before attempting to hook up a radio is send it to me for it's ''LONG OVER DUE'' Basic Electronic Restoration

If it ain't inside of radio i have no idea! Try NCRS.org for Corvettes. WebRings at bottom of main page has lots of info on other models. Check with other special interest groups.

Volume & Tuning shafts use two set of nuts, one to hold shafts to radio and one set to hold radio to dash! Do not let shafts slide back into radio!

A note to the over stressed, pushy, gonna make it happen types: "GO AWAY!" I do the best i can as fast as i can! You are not the only one in the world wanting his Delco Car Radio Restored.
If this does not suit You then please send it to some one else!

Most 60% of all the radios i work on will ship back in better working order than the day they left the factory! I give 100% of what i have to each radio! Why would any one waste their time with anything less? But SHIT HAPPENS! If You do not belive me ask Michel Andretti about his engine going up in flames with the field a lap down at INDY!

I will not restore Your radio in exchange for You correcting my website!

Sorry to have to bother the 99.99% of MY GREAT COUSTOMERS who know better with all the problems that .1% throw at me!

Where is Alamo TN? Right dead center in the middle of WestTennessee, We succeed from the counties that now surround Crockett eight days after the battle the names honor! Now You know along with dealing with so many Vette owners why i have a attitude! Not to mention being the only man left alive in the world Certified by Delco on Your radio! With how many million of them made?

Love to work on the radios! But they take TOTAL concreation sometimes! & it is the most disheartening thang in the world to spend five, six hours that seams like fifteen minutes of battling with a problem with out even stopping for a bathroom break! to have the phone ring and waste all that time & work on a radio that if i had two more minutes would have finished but now may take weeks to get back to were i was when the phone rang!

If You happen to talk with Private Malone tell him Tony Mac makes those sticky 66 Corvette buttons, play like Bobby Whitlock's B3

I want to make it plain and simple for all to understand about cost of restorations:

"If any additional work is required or recommended please notify me with an estimate for approval."

As i state on this website that upon my first inspection IF i see anything that i can not do for the Basic Electronic Restoration fee I will notify You before doing any more. BUT IF I think the Basic is all that the unit is going to need will proceed.
Sometimes after i do the basic and play unit for a few day problems show up. The Basic Electronic Restoration MUST be done and unit played for two weeks before i will give a TOTAL on cost for work done.

These radios are 40 years to 60 years! Many surviving basically open to the weather! Or coated with oil, paint thinner or water, etc. Delco gave a 90 day warranty on the units when they were new. I give a FIVE YEAR warranty on my work and parts i install.

IF You want me to do the work it is going to be with YOU understanding ''I DO MY BEST'' I am not going to charge You for something i did not do, i am not going to do something that is not need! BUT ''I AIN'T GOING TO SPEND MY TIME & PARTS WORKING ON THEM AND NOT GET PAID TO DO SO!'' SO NO! way will i commit my self to lock in on a Basic Electronic Restoration fee on units that may play for a week or longer after i do that work, then have them go up in smoke. Then maybe have to find a donor unit to get parts form etc, etc, etc,!

In case i do see more damage on first inspection than the Basic Electronic Restoration covers i will contact You with estimate of cost of additional charges that i see and You may decline service, there is a minimum of $150.00 check out charge on any radio sent into the shop + return shipping/handling fees. Do keep in mind some problems take time to show up and once You give me the OK to do the Basic Electronic Restoration there are NO REFUNDS! for that service.

Historically October and, November is when most of my work orders come in, 60~80% at this time! Often taking till Feburay or later to work all of those off. Then after the spring Barrett-Jackson AZ auction and, Daytona 500. IF You wait till March to get on my work list, You may not receive You project back untill August or later. So IF You hope to have Your project finished by spring You need to be on my work list by early November. Because after having my head stuck in radios all winter come spring i am ready to get outside to watch the wind blow and, grass grow! Myself.

My electronic service skills come from going on my first TV service call with my Dad at the age of eight. Certified and, trained by RCA & Motorola on there audio products at 13, Delco in 1967 at the age of 14. Working with the top recording studio builders and, live touring sound companies in the world with 43+ years of on the job traning in electronic sound system service! AND, I still learn on every unit i work on!
P/S: I did not get Zenith's certification back in the day because they all ready had a TV tech in the area BUT i did do his audio work!

In 1967 just as i turned 14 I was the only one Delco found in a nation wide search through all the schools looking for "young ones" to train as there upcoming radio techs! The next man on the list was 55. A few years later Dr. M.R. Bose was certified.
I was told by the time i was 50. GM expected a 1955 Corvette to be worth $20,000.00 and they wanted to make sure there would be factory trained techs to take care of there radios!
In the very unusual event, You are having a problem with a unit i restored for You! Your project goes to the top of my work list!
